Meditation

Beginning a Meditation Practice

It was recommended to me many times to try meditation before I actually tried it.  I kept pushing it off thinking how is meditating really going to help, I have real problems here.  Well I couldn’t have been more wrong.  Meditation, for me, is very sneaky in the ways it helps.  I still don’t even think I am doing it the right way, but yet I see improvements all the time from it.  The way I see improvements are when I get lazy and either skip it or do not make it a priority.  I am scattered, more emotional, and just can’t seem to focus.

Headspace is an app that you can download which takes you step by step and gives you a free 10 day trial.  I tried this and found it really helpful, but again was inconsistent.  Consistency is key with meditation.

Insight app is another great one that I recently discovered. It has different kinds of guided meditations that are amazing for beginners. It also has a timer with different tone options to end your practice.

If an app doesn’t sound appealing, or is not accessible YouTube has a ton of free meditations for all sorts of things.

Even just sitting comfortably in a quiet space for a few moments and letting your mind rest is meditation believe it or not.  The key to doing so is to just accept wherever your mind takes you and not judge it or beat yourself up for thinking whatever it is you may be thinking.  This acceptance then trickles into the rest of your life.  Once you are comfortable with that you can start to simply redirect your mind away from those thoughts if you so choose.  This gentle redirection can help to stop the never ending chatter that some of us endure in our minds daily.
